Support for Families of Children with Disabilities

Support for Families of Children with Disabilities

Support for Families of Children with Disabilities is a parent-run, San Francisco-based, non-profit organization founded in 1982. Its purpose is to ensure that families of children with any kind of disability or special health care need have the knowledge and assistance they need to make informed choices that support their child’s health, education, and development.

Support for Families provides peer support to families, and information and education to families, professionals, and the community at large. Most staff members, volunteers, and board members are parents of children with disabilities.

Support for Families’ services—all free—include a drop-in center and phone line, support groups, parent mentoring, workshops and clinics, a quarterly newsletter, a library, a technology lab and more. Every year more than 500 new families consult with trained Community Resource Parents. Attendance at workshops and trainings exceeds 2,500 parents and professionals.
