Friends of the National Zoo

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo was established more than 100 years ago and is one of the most beloved cultural institutions in the Washington, D.C. community and the nation. The National Zoo welcomes more than 2 million visitors a year to see up close wild animals from around the world. It inspires people to learn through interactive exhibits and award-winning education programs, and from its research by more than three hundred internationally-renowned scientists working worldwide to save endangered species.

The National Zoo is dedicated to demonstrating how humans can take better care of the Earth. We strive to generate power from renewable resources, protect the watershed in our local Rock Creek Park, use resources wisely, and design exhibit spaces using the greenest technologies.

Because the National Zoo is part of the Smithsonian, it does not charge an admission fee. It depends on Friends of the National Zoo and donations to continue to protect animals and habitats and to educate people about wildlife, sustainability, and science.
