As an organization that has already made an impact on the lives of nearly 100,000 boys and girls, Eckerd Youth Alternatives (EYA) is one of the nation's leading providers of services for at-risk youth and their families through Outdoor Therapeutic Programs; Alternative Day Schools; Community-Based Support Programs; Early Intervention and Prevention Services; Lead Agency Services for Child Welfare; and Residential Therapeutic Programs. Founded by Jack and Ruth Eckerd, today EYA operates 38 distinct and diverse programs in nine states.
Jack Eckerd said an investment in children is an investment in the future of our country. In 1968, the Eckerds purchased 880 wooded acres and opened a small Outdoor Therapeutic Program for troubled boys, named “E-How-Kee.” That program paved the way for more therapeutic programs, for both boys and girls. Over the organization’s 41-year history, one principle has remained constant: in a nurturing, caring environment, kids learn how to re-direct their behavior, take responsibility for their choices and internalize the skills to become productive, successful citizens. They often come to the program scarred by years of abuse and neglect that has left them angry, hurt, and confused. At EYA, they find dedicated counselors who provide a safe environment that helps them heal.
