Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly (CARIE)

The Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly (CARIE) is a non-profit organization, based in Philadelphia, dedicated to improving the quality of life for vulnerable older people. CARIE fulfills its core mission — to improve the well being, rights and autonomy of older persons through advocacy, education, and action — through a “case to cause” model of advocacy that addresses problems and issues on both the individual and the systemic levels. Because frail older adults often lack the ability to advocate on their own behalf without assistance, CARIE provides individual advocacy through direct service and systemic advocacy through education and public policy initiatives. CARIE's most successful and widely used service is the CARIE LINE. The CARIE LINE is a free telephone-based and online advocacy service addressing issues of concern impacting older adults. CARIE also offers a free monthly e-newsletter that provides information about policy related issues impacting older adults.

A message from CARIE:

We are different from other agencies in that we don’t provide traditional services (home care, meals, transportation), rather we advocate for older adults to get needed services and benefits. We also advocate to ensure their dignity and the provision of quality care. CARIE’s ability to intervene on behalf of older adults and their caregivers and identify creative ways to meet their needs, coupled with intensive systemic advocacy to improve the availability of affordable quality care, offer a safety net to help those who would otherwise fall through the cracks of the service system. For example, one of the many people CARIE has helped was Mrs. V, 91. Due to a bureaucratic snafu her Social Security benefits had been reduced from $500 to $350 per month. CARIE contacted the Social Security Administration to have her checks reinstated at the original level plus retroactive payments of $1,700 to make-up for the difference when she received a lower check. CARIE also helped her secure additional benefits, get needed hearing aids, and find her own apartment. We want to thank Baking for Good and everyone who helps support our cause.
