Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) promotes bicycle technology as a concrete alternative to war and environmental destruction.
For 25 years, BNB has been a nexus of bike recycling and community empowerment both in lower income neighborhoods of Boston and in the nations of the Global South. BNB processes over 5,000 donated bikes a year, shipping most of these to Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa, Guatemala, and Nevis Island in the Caribbean to a variety of micro-enterprise bike shops, job training programs, and alternative technology centers. BNB also sends trainers and technical assistance to help people set up these programs. In Boston, BNB runs youth programs for teens who each pick out a donated bike to rebuild and keep, while learning safe riding skills, nutrition and physical health, environmental issues, and leadership in these positive after-school programs. BNB also runs a full-service retail bike shop to put used bikes back on the road in Boston and support the youth and international work.
