The Mmofra Trom Bead Project raises funds to cover high school education costs for vulnerable Ghanaian children. These auspicious children were given a scholarship to Mmofra Trom, a prestigious elementary school located near Somanya, Ghana. Upon their graduation from Mmofra Trom, they have an enormous potential to benefit their entire community. Unfortunately, there is currently not enough funding to cover their high school tuition costs. The Mmofra Trom Bead Project’s priority is to ensure that each child has the opportunity to have a high school education. 100% of all profits, 85 cents of every dollar, go directly into an account for their future tuition costs.
The Mmofra Trom Bead Project is a strategic business plan, designed by Bentley University students, with a purpose of funding high school education costs for vulnerable children at the Mmofra Trom School. These children may have lost one or both of their parents to diseases including AIDS or other untimely deaths.
Mmofra Trom fosters a student population comprised of children from surrounding communities including both tuition-paying students, as well as around 22 vulnerable children from neighboring villages. The tuition-paying, boarding students attend the school on a trimester basis and return to their families in between academia. But for those without families to return to, there is year-round support provided by the facility’s managers.
The vulnerable students graduate from the school with enormous potential. Unfortunately, there is currently not enough funding to send these intelligent students to high school. The high school tuition costs typically range between 900-1200 Cedi (the Ghanaian currency). The American dollar exchange is around $650.00 to $850.00.
Mmofra Trom students enjoy beading beautiful, recycled-glass bracelets during their free time. An entrepreneurial Bentley student suggested selling these bracelets in the United States to raise funds to cover the high school tuition costs. Today, around 5 years after the idea was proposed, the Mmofra Trom Bead Project is in operation. The Bentley students have devised a market for the bracelets in the United States through various outlets including cooperating stores and its website. All profits raised go directly into a fund that will be used for the vulnerable student’s future education upon graduation from Mmofra Trom.
